Balanced Forces 1

Even when things stay still, forces are acting on them.

When you stand on the floor, gravity pulls you down. If the floor didn’t push you back, you would start to move, getting faster and faster as gravity continued to pull. Because the forces are equal and balanced, you do not start to move.

Jane and Mehmet are having a tug-o’-war contest. They are both pulling hard, but the rope is not moving.
